Best-of-breed vs. one vendor: the challenges and opportunities of integrating innovative 3rd party solutions. We will talk about the broad strategic decision and challenge faced by hospital organizations today: either focus on one large vendors integrated solutions OR try to make many vendors “best-of” solutions work well together. We’ll discuss two common approaches to this IT strategy question and some of the big challenges that are presented. Finally, we’ll talk about a new approach that we are pursuing with Cerner (a major EMR vendor) that attempts to open their systems as a platform for integrated third party development. We’ll discuss how this approach has the potential to change the game and how this fits in with common trends in other IT industries.
